It wasn’t always this way for me as far as Tomb Raider goes. Back in 1996 when the first Tomb Raider hit, leading up to its release there was a ton of press in the various video game magazines at the time. I have to be honest here and I really was not impressed I was a teenage boy at the time lets just say Tomb Raider had its appeal like it did for most teenage boys at the time, I just never really had any interest in playing the actual game. That all changed in Christmas on 1996 my auntie came round two days before Christmas to give us our gifts. I could tell right away that it was a Playstation game, but I had no clue what one it could be as I never once talked about games to my aunt. As I was opening it she told me that the man in the store told her that this was the best game this Christmas. I opened it and there it was Tomb Raider.
I was hooked right from the opening cinematic the game simply put looked amazing, sure it may look all jaggy and terrible now but back in 96 Lara looked great. The game was very hard and it took me the whole Christmas break to beat it. The original Tomb Raider was one of those games that when you first play it the controls are very awkward but the more you stick with it the better you can control Lara and the game just becomes even more fun.
By the time Tomb Raider 2 was announced it is fair to say that I was a hardcore fan and I would get whatever magazine (no good internet access back then folks) that had any coverage of the game I could find. I was lucky that the day Tomb Raider 2 released here in the UK was the same day as my birthday, so off I went with my money so I could then spend the foreseeable future with Lara. I remember many magazines making a big deal over how realistically Lara’s ponytail would swing back and forth, which now does kind of make you sound weird talking about a characters ponytail. Anyway Tomb Raider 2 was everything the first was and more, I found Lara much smoother to control this time and the games visuals were slightly improved. Over all it was just a great sequel.
By the time the third Tomb Raider hit I was losing a little interest. I got the game for Christmas and while I thought it looked great it was really hard, much harder than the other two and not in a fun way either. Tomb Raider 3 just felt downright unfair and while I did get to the end of the game it was there were many frustrating parts that made it less fun than the other games. The next two Tomb Raider games I was lucky enough to get for the Dreamcast, Tomb Raider The Last Generation I thought was amazing. They took out a great deal of the frustration from the third game and on the Dreamcast the visuals were amazing. The sequel to this Chronicles I also played on the Dreamcast but it kind of disappointed me, I could not really give a real reason there was just something lacking.
We than had a long wait for the next instalment on the Playstation 2 called Angel of Darkness this game got really mixed reviews on release it had a real tough development time and it showed. There were many elements of this game that were great, but there was also just as many moments where the game felt broken and just plainly untested.
This led to a reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise that in my opinion spawned three fantastic games. Tomb Raider Legend was a re telling of the origins of Lara Croft it had a great story but more importantly the game was great to play, Lara had never been so much fun to control. They used the foundations for this game as the base for a remake of the first Tomb Raider which was also a great deal of fun. But perhaps the best was the last one Tomb Raider Underworld this game is amazing perhaps the best Tomb Raider game that has ever been made it has the great game play of Tomb Raider Legend but has the setting of the older games.
Tomb Raider has been a mixed series but to be fair it has done far more good than it has bad. Here is hoping this next Tomb Raider reboot can offer as much fun as Tomb Raider Legend did.
